This is the Nr.1 Mistake I See People Making all the Time

The Nr. 1 mistake I see people making in DIY branding photography is not looking for flattering light.

What is the wrong light for your personal branding photos?

Like taking photos in the evening, with Tungsten light coming from straight above.  Yes, that would be your living room flood light for example.  Or your favorite chair - indoors far away from the windows? Harsh light again.

Similarly unflattering is outdoor light that comes straight from above – as opposed to open shade.
This kind of light can easily turn your bright lovely eyes into dark hollows, emphasizing dark rings under your eyes and bring out every imperfection in the skin. Not a look most of us are going for .

Where to find flattering light

When I work with you on personal branding images, the first thing I do is look for delicious, soft light. 

 We will choose the locations of your shoot not only for their on-brand quality but also for the quality of light they offer.

For now, start practicing to become more aware of soft flattering light: find time during early morning or late afternoon and sneak outside for a few personal brand test shots.  Stand in a shady spot where you can see the sky. Turn your face toward the light and start snapping away.

 You will notice that that kind of light will bring out that sparkle in your eyes. Pay attention how the light is changing during the day and the seasons to find the most flattering light.
